The Big Data Analytics Platform | @BigDataExpo #Cloud #BigData

In the boardroom with... Derek Gabbard, President, FourV Systems, LLC

Derek Gabbard is the President of FourV Systems, LLC, a subsidiary of SRC, Inc.

Security Solutions Watch.com: Thank you for joining us today, Derek. Can you please give us an overview of your background?

Derek Gabbard: It's a pleasure to be with you today. Before coming to SRC and working to help launch FourV Systems, I worked in the information and network security world for almost 20 years. I was a founder of Lookingglass Cyber Solutions, a cyber-threat intelligence product company, and spent a number of years working at the Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) in the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. I got my start in this career field in the United States Air Force in the mid-1990s.

SecuritySolutionsWatch.com: You mentioned that you came to SRC to help launch FourV Systems. What led to this development?

Derek Gabbard: SRC, the parent company of FourV, is a not-for-profit company that has provided research and development services to U.S. government customers for more than 55 years. Over the last several years, in response to customer challenges and market needs, SRC has been developing analytic platforms for what is known today as "Big Data." Due to some recent, high profile data breaches (that you can read about in the news), SRC saw an opportunity to focus on the commercial application of its research and development, and began to focus on products and services in the Big Data analytics market. SRC formed FourV to offer its analytic platform, known as the GreySparkTM Reasoning Engine, into the commercial marketspace.

SecuritySolutionsWatch.com: Can you tell us more about the GreySpark Reasoning Engine? Does FourV offer any other products or services?

Derek Gabbard: We're committed to making the GreySpark Reasoning Engine the industry leader in combining historical Big Data analytics and real-time, fast data analytics and processing. The core of GreySpark is incredibly flexible and can be applied across a number of use cases within the enterprise. We are developing flexible yet powerful modules to be deployed with the core engine to address enterprise needs in fraud detection, financial market analysis and have additional capabilities in the roadmap for other use cases as well.

FourV also offers professional services to deploy and tune the GreySpark core and supporting modules.

SecuritySolutionsWatch.com: One of many challenges with Big Data analytics is the ability to quickly correlate historical and current data which leads to missed opportunities in avoiding a real-time cyberattack. Will the GreySpark reasoning engine help with this?

Derek Gabbard: In general, there has been a significant gap between doing scheduled analysis on historical data, often referred to as "batch processing," and dealing with big, fast data analytics in real-time, known as "stream processing." Most enterprises are working to unlock knowledge from this historical information - to find events, patterns, anomalies, and other interesting information from that often massive data store. For most of those enterprises, applying what they are able to learn from this historical analysis to their real-time data flow, so they can find and even avoid events in real-time, is a very human-intensive effort. This means the analysis itself, and the application of that output, depends on human interaction - which introduces several potential challenges. Some can be overcome, such as bias in the analysts work. Some cannot be overcome easily, such as the ever increasing data volume available to the enterprise and speed that data is flowing in.

We built the GreySpark reasoning engine to fill that gap between historical analytics and real-time analytics. It is an extremely powerful set of processing, machine learning, analytics, and interfaces which ultimately makes Big Data analytics available to nearly all enterprises, and brings those who deploy and use the GreySpark reasoning engine much closer to becoming the "event driven enterprise" they desire.

SecuritySolutionsWatch.com: Can we discuss some use cases for Big Data analytics for a moment? We couldn't agree more that, "Effective decisions are made by cueing the right data at the right time." Please tell us more about how the GreySpark reasoning engine enables this kind of capability.

Derek Gabbard: Think about fraud for a moment. Fraud and identity theft are rampant across many diverse sectors and applications, including medical, tax-related, financial transactions and a host of others. In each of these sectors, enterprises have often stored years' worth of meaningful data related to their businesses. There's an incredible amount of information locked in that historical data - both in identifying valid activity and classifying fraudulent behavior. But enterprises in different sectors have vastly different data types and information stored as a part of their historical transaction data set. Additionally, what is a normal, valid transaction type to one enterprise in a given sector might be problematic for another enterprise in the same sector - either based on the size of the enterprise, normal transaction parameters, geo-location of transactions, frequency of transactions from similar parties, and so-on. So to set the parameters for real-time processing on active data streams - and to identify real events in real-time - means there has to be significant knowledge unlocked for each individual enterprise from their own data, their own business processes, and their unique situation. That's why we built the GreySpark reasoning engine.

Now, apply that same reasoning to manufacturing process data, financial market data, as well as other sectors, and you can see how unlocking knowledge in historical data and applying the knowledge to real-time data streams can be extremely powerful.

SecuritySolutionsWatch.com: What are your key target markets?

Derek Gabbard: The GreySpark reasoning engine is extremely flexible, so it can be applied across many markets. Initially, we are building modules that focus on various types of fraud as well as financial market analysis and manufacturing.

SecuritySolutionsWatch.com: This solution sounds like something which is built for large enterprises. Is there a plan to be able to bring a solution like GreySpark to smaller enterprises?

Derek Gabbard: We've built the GreySpark reasoning engine to be deployed in a cloud environment - whether the public cloud or a private cloud inside the enterprise. Additionally, we've optimized the platform to automatically scale the infrastructure it uses to match the needs - in data processing, data analytics, and reporting. This has allowed us to give some flexibility for enterprise customers from a cost perspective, which opens up these analytic capabilities to customers who might have been priced out of other Big Data analytic platforms.

SecuritySolutionsWatch.com: How can commercial clients engage with FourV Systems?

Derek Gabbard: There is a contact us page on our corporate web site,www.fourv.com. Any organizations looking for solutions or to partner with us should find the contact information they need there.

SecuritySolutionsWatch.com: Thanks again for joining us today, Derek. Are there any other subjects you would like to discuss?

Derek Gabbard: No, but I would like to thank you for your time and your interest in this topic. As you can tell, it's something we are passionate about and something we think will make a real difference for our customers.
