Announcing All Star @SoftLayer Faculty at @CloudExpo Silicon Valley [#Cloud #PaaS]

SoftLayer Cloud Track at Cloud Expo

As Platform as a Service (PaaS) matures as a category, developers should have the ability to use the programming language of their choice to build applications and have access to a wide array of services.

Bluemix isIBM's open cloud development platform that enables users to easily build cloud-based, creative mobile and web applications without having to spend large amounts of time and resources on configuring infrastructure and multiple software licenses.

Join SoftLayer on Nov. 4 at 15th Cloud Expo to learn about the array of services to support and accelerate application development, as well as building applications on Bluemix using Java and node.JS.

Learn more about Bluemix at www.bluemix.net.

SoftLayer Track at Cloud Expo Schedule, Nov. 4, 2014

Everything You Need to Know about Developing Bluemix apps with node.js - 10:55 - 11:30 am
Speaker: Patrick Mueller
Over the last few years, developing your cloud applications with node.js has become hugely popular. Organizations such as Walmart Labs, PayPal and Netflix have seen increased developer productivity and improved performance for their projects that are using node.js. IBM's Bluemix Platform-as-a-Service product provides first-class support for building applications using node.js, as well as being able to run almost any other language runtime. Come to this session to learn everything you need to know about building your next application on Bluemix using node.js.

Speaker Bio:
Patrick Mueller is an IBMer working in the Raleigh, NC area. He has been using node.js for a few years now, starting with contributing debug tooling to the Apache Cordova project. Currently he is a developer advocate for IBM's Bluemix PaaS product, based on the open source Cloud Foundry project.

It's All About Speed (Using Services in Bluemix) - 11:35 - 12:10 pm
Speaker: Jeff Sloyer
Gone are the days where you have to setup a database or external dependencies. Developers nowadays just want to code and focus on their business logic. No one wants to spend the time setting up external dependencies any more, it's all about speed baby! With Bluemix you can get a database or other external dependency setup and managed for you. This presentation will go into what a service is in Bluemix and why you would want to use one. Additionally, this presentation will include live coding examples of integrating services into Java and Node.JS apps.

Speaker Bio:
Jeff Sloyer is an IBMer working in the Raleigh, NC area. He has been working with Java and Node.JS for the past couple years. Currently he is a developer evangelist for IBM's Bluemix PaaS product, based on the open source Cloud Foundry project.

SoftLayer continues its coverage at Cloud Expo with the following sessions:

General Session: How to Architect and Optimize Your Cloud for Consistent Performance - Nov 4, 2:35 - 3:05 pm
Speakers: Phil Jackson, Development Community Advocate at SoftLayer, and Harold Hannon, Sr. Software Architect at SoftLayer

Performance is the intersection of power, agility, control, and choice. If you value performance, and more specifically consistent performance, you need to look beyond simple virtualized compute. Many factors need to be considered to create a truly performant environment. Learn how to take advantage of a multitude of compute options and platform features to make cloud the cornerstone of your online presence.

Are You Ready to Put Your Data in the Cloud? - Nov 4, 10:55 - 11:30 am
Speaker: Skyla Loomis, Program Director of Cloudant Development.
Come learn about what you need to consider when moving your data to the cloud. We'll discuss the security, performance, and operational implications of keeping your data on premise, moving it to the cloud, or taking a hybrid approach. We'll use real customer examples to illustrate the tradeoffs, key decision points, and how to be successful with a cloud or hybrid cloud solution.

High Performance, Scalable Big Data Solutions in a Bare Metal Cloud - Nov. 5, 2:10 - 2:45 pm
Speaker: Harold Hannon, Sr. Software Architect at SoftLayer
The cloud provides an easy onramp to building and deploying Big Data solutions. Transitioning from initial deployment to large-scale, highly performant operations may not be as easy. Understanding the benefits, weaknesses, and performance characteristics of public and bare metal cloud deployments can help you make the right decisions.

IaaS Thinking for Cloud Apps - Nov. 4, 4:40 - 5:15 pm
Speaker: Phil Jackson, Development Community Advocate at SoftLayer
Planning scalable environments isn't terribly difficult, but it does require a change of perspective. During this session we'll broaden our views to think on an Internet Scale by dissecting a video publishing application built with The SoftLayer Platform, Message Queuing, Object Storage, and Drupal. By examining a scalable modular application build that can handle unpredictable traffic, you'll be able to grow your development arsenal and pick up a few strategies to apply to your own projects.
